An Analysis of Cultural Differences in Daily Communication Between China and West
I. Introduction
Most of people hold a view that studying foreign language is just to learn its vocabulary, grammar and then use the language to communicate or express emotion. In fact, vocabulary or grammar is just one part of the language and culture is a more important and necessary factor in the process of studying foreign language.
Social scientists tell us that cultures are different from one another, and each culture is unique. Every country has its own culture. It is not only material wealth and spiritual wealth, but also daily communication. As everyone knows, there is a large cultural difference between China and West. With China’s entry the WTO and the holding of the Olympic Games in 2008, the relationship between China and West in politics, economy, and culture will become more and more closely. It is undoubted that the daily communication will play an important role in this process, because the daily communication is a more important part of human communication. As cultures are different, expressions are different. Although it is only natural differences, in expressions it can cause cultural differences in daily communication between cross-cultural communications (Deng Yanchang, Liu Runqing, 1989:4). That is to say between China and West. There are so many cultural differences in daily communication between China and West. With more and more cross-cultural communication, because of cultural differences in daily communication, the unnecessary conflict, misunderstanding and embarrassment may arise. Those can be avoided if only people have an awareness of cultural differences in daily communication. This paper will use examples to analyze cultural differences in daily communication and their causations between China and West.
II. Cultural Differences in Daily Communication
Cultural differences in daily communication between China and West can be found in many aspects of daily communication, including forms of address, greetings and farewells, compliments and responses, apologies and thanks and other considerations in communication.
