Located in the heart of Siberia, the village of Oymyakon in Russia is widely considered to be the coldest inhabited place on Earth. The average temperature for January in the village is -50°C and the coldest temperature ever recorded there was -71.2°C. Oymyakon has a population of approximately 500 people.

In this village, the length of a day is 3 hours in December. Cars can only be placed in heated garages. The ones left outside must keep running, otherwise they won’t restart. Even if there was mobile phone reception, the phone batteries would not survive the cold.

在奥伊米亚康村，人人都穿貂！

Fur is one of the only ways to stay warm in Oymyakon and is used out of necessity, not fashion.

上个厕所都要鼓足勇气，因为厕所都在外面。村里有个小卖部，像机器猫的口袋一样，村民们要啥有啥——其实主要是因为村民们也没啥想买的……

There are few modern conveniences in the village — with many buildings still having outdoor toilets — and most people still burn coal and wood for heat. The only working shop in Oymyakon provides the villagers with everything they need.

这里是真正的不毛之地，啥也不长，村民们只好过上了梁山好汉般的生活——天天喝酒吃肉。

Nothing grows there so people eat reindeer meat and horsemeat.

If you were to go outside naked on an average day, it would take approximately one minute for you to freeze to death.

Another problem caused by the frozen temperatures is burying dead bodies, which can take anything up to three days. The earth must first have thawed sufficiently in order to dig it, so a bonfire is lit for a couple of hours. Hot coals are then pushed to the side and a hole couple of inches deep is dug. The process is repeated for several days until the hole is deep enough to bury the coffin.
