英汉数字文化习语对比研究及其翻译
Abstract
Numbers play a vital role in the development of human society. Therefore, numerous idioms related to numbers have emerged. These idioms make human language vivid, concise in form and rich in meaning. Some numbers are heavily imprinted with religious, psychological and mythic colors. Based upon a large number of convincing examples, the thesis explores and analyzes the similarities and differences between English and Chinese numerical idioms cultural aspects.
Then, the author probes further into the feasible techniques or approaches that could be employed in the translation of English and Chinese numerical idioms, which involves not only the rendering of the idiom itself but the specific cultural elements embedded as well. Therefore, translating numerical idioms can be termed as the transference between two cultures. Taking it into consideration, two translation approaches, domestication and foreignization, are proposed. In the author’s opinion, in translating numerical idioms the foreignizing approach should be adopted whenever possible so as to retain the original sense and flavor of the source language, while the domesticating approach is resorted to only when the original sense can not be properly absorbed or comprehended by the target language readers. To attain the above goal, targeting translation strategies are put forward. For keeping the original sense and effect in the foreignizing approach, the suggested two strategies are: literal translation and literal translation plus paraphrase. And for adjusting original numerical images in the domesticating approach, the author advises the use of the strategy: paraphrase.

摘 要
数字在人类社会发展进程中起着举足轻重的作用，因此语言中存在大量与数字相关的习语。这些习语使得英汉两种语言言简意赅，形象生动，表达力强，文化内涵丰富。由于英汉文化的共通性和思维方式的相似性，人们会对同一数字产生相同或相似的联想；但是由于英汉民族在自然环境、社会制度、风俗习惯、宗教信仰及思维方式等方面又存在着差异，形成了各具特色的民族文化。文化的差异，导致人们对同一数字赋予不同的情感和联想，而不同的数字可能产生相同或相似的联想。
