In a broad sense,there are two kinds of translation of advertisement. One is literal translation,and the other is liberal translation. Among translators there has been a length dispute about these two kinds of translation, and we find it hard to say which is preferable. In fact, the two methods are both necessary,because, they are depending on the context. We must recognize that the translation not only should be simple and clear, but also can attractive the consumer. Therefore,sometimes we should use literal translation,some times that of liberal translation. The following research is just a try.

1. Literal translation

1.1. Definition and the ways of use literal translation in advertisements translation

Literal translation refers to an adequate and careful re-presentation of the original. When the original coincides or almost tallies with the language in the sequence of vocabulary,in grammatical structure and rhetorical device,literal translation can be used. For example:

(a)松下,您明智的选择.

Choose, Panasonic? Very wise.

(b)长虹音响,您的理想.

Changhong stereo, your ideal.

Here the original sentence ought to be translated literally,and it is accurate and effective.

(c)上海丝绸及纤维织品,一摸就知!

Shanghai silk and other fibre knitwear,with the touch that’s just right.

The translation are very good. “一摸就知” are translated into “with the touch that’s just right”. But the words are not brief,so we can translate like this:

Shanghai silk and other fibre knitwear,touching is believing.

(d)越过历代君王的长眠之地(中国民航).

Across the vast land where the emperors eternally slumber. (CAAC)

(e)客厅设备考究舒适,气氛温馨,全套厨房设备为欧洲各厂生产. (金城大厦)
